Landscapes Abstracts

To balance the grounding in reality of my landscapes, I create abstract or non-objective paintings from many sources. One source is my palettes. I use wax paper on a board for palettes and after a few sessions, I remove these and replace them with a new sheet. I fold and save the old palettes as a reminder of the wonderful colors I mixed and of the painting process. In reviewing my stack of old palettes, I began noticing fantastic colors and shapes. Pretty soon I started using selected sections of these palettes as a basis for abstract work. I usually start with a very colorful section and then refine and simplify, mainly by overpainting many colors and shapes, until I achieve the result I desire. The traces of the underlying areas add to the depth and texture I love. Samples are contained below.

SWIRL Abstracts

I also paint what I call swirls. These are made of loose brush strokes where I start out with lines and then fill in and add colors and lines as the inspiration strikes me. The basis of these works are also some small works I did with various colored markers. I wanted to make something more permanent from these small works so transcribed and interpreted them into acrylic and oil paint. I see these as Jackson Pollock type works, but more under control, because I love to use silver, gold, and other metallic colors, like Pollock did.

GRID Abstracts

My newest work involves grids. I have been reading about abstract expressionism and its aftermaths, minimalism, plus a new book on Brice Marden. I have been looking for a way to move forward from earlier art "movements" and somehow combine them. These new works start out as taped grids to which I add my swirl type abstract expressionist ideas, and then peel off the tape to form the grid. I finish the "blank" spaces with greys, to form an almost op-art effect. I title the work by using the number of cubes in the grids. The paintings are covered in thick paint so texture becomes a part of the effect also. It takes quite a few hours to paint in individual squares when there are hundreds of them. I look forward to seeing where the grid idea takes me. I have a few others where I drew the grid over an older work and then filled in the cubes I felt needed changes. Some of these have the feel of an old wall or graffiti. I will post some of these once they are finished.
