December 8 and 15, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. A few missed the news that we slipped the second Saturday race to third due my 25th anniversary trip to Mexico so we had a split race. The earlier weekend had the better weather as 15th it was cold and windy with intermittent rain but luckily the rain held off during the race. 15th racers deferred to the weather and just did a social workout as Bob was a few minutes slower than prior month and kept me company.

Anne Tuberg, 47, 26 plus something as reported by Richard Z.- raced on the 8th.
Bob Novak, 58, 27:53 (15th)
Stan Chraminski, 60, 27:54 (15th)
Gordon Hartwig, 64, 30:11 (15th)
Richard Zerbe, 69, 30:49 (8th)
Joslyn Slaughter, 48, 30:49 (8th)

November 10, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Surprisingly nice day for November with cool calm conditions. Dan Pierce was visiting from Colorado for the weekend. I was out with sore knee from running - so much for my new 60 age group running comeback!

Dan Pierce, 51, 25:11
Bob Novak, 58, 25:35
Anne Tuberg, 47, 26:33

October 13, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Very foggy, damp and cool, mid 40's temperature. Fog started burning off as we finished and became a beautiful 60's day. Had 3 very enthusiastic ladies for the clinic after the race. Times are a little slow as Bob and I started chatting after a first decent mile so just a good tempo walk versus a race.

Bob Novak, 58, 27:15
Stan Chraminski, 59.9 (3 weeks from turning 60), 27:15
Gordon Hartwig,63, 29:42

World Masters Games from Tommy Aunun

World Masters went very well. I walked my fastest times since my
comeback into RW in 2000 both in 10K and 20K. I improved from my fastest
time of 26:40 in the 5K this year by 43 seconds to 25:57.
5K I got 8th place....25:57
10K I got 14th place...53:48
20K I got 9th place...1:50:40

August 11, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. Nice warm morning again with minimal breeze. PS. I'm not in the results as tweaked a hamstring on Tuesday and the leg wrap only held off the pain for about 2 miles so I dnf'd at 2.5. Back to the ice packs for a few days. That's the problem with training. If you do it you risk injury, if you don't, you're slow. Finding the in-between is the art to the science.

September 16, Fairhaven Runners 15K race, Bellingham, WA. Advertised as a flat fast course. Wondered where that came from as we lined up at the start and looked up at the two block hill we were ready to start up. Hit the crest and then rolling road for next two miles. Then went downhill to flatter land but had numerous twists and turns and changes of surface, from concrete, to wooden slats, to gravel. At 7 miles Bob and I were still on pace to break 1.5 hours. Then we went uphill to halfway up the crest and ran into 2 miles of gravel road. I was feeling pretty good and tried to chase Bob down but could only do 10 flat miles. Wow. Disappointing for the effort. Then at mile 9 marker we had a 100 yard steep bridge up from the waterfront again and finished on the gravel. I don't think this would be a fast running course and for racewalking it was terrible. It's going on my list of never do again race courses.

USATF National Masters T&F Meet, Charlotte,NC, August 3-7. I've included all the results from their site and highlighted those with NW connections. Friday's 5K took place on a record setting heat day where it reached 98 and muggy. Someone said temp was 92 and radiant heat on track at Men's 30-59 race at 9:10 am was 119. Enough said.

Sunday's 10K was on a hilly course although temperature was only 76 or so. My body clock at 7 am was still on 4 am Seattle time but I had a good race effortwise. Tommy Aunan takes the prize for coming closest to his Seattle times in those conditions. He medalled as well as Bart Kale.

June 3rd and May 28, walked a 10 K in a running road race in Los Angeles, very hot, and a day after ran in pants and jacket and gloves in Seattle. Was high 70's but felt like 100. 60:54 (Personal worst 10K) although did match my race number, 154, for one hour, 54 seconds. Next, June 3rd did the California State Senior Games 5K racewalk at Cal Tech in Pasadena. Was 81 degrees as pulled into the parking lot at 8:15 am. Was 91 as left at 10 am so race temp at 9 was about 85 and track was way hotter. Finished 2nd to Larry Walker in 28:54. Was happy to finish only 26 seconds slower than last month in cool Oregon. Now I have a feel for what Charlotte will be like in August only with humidity, or like my mom says, humility. Yes, it will probably bring some of that too.

May 13, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. A warm morning  with a little breeze. Fast times for most.

May 7, 2006.
The Month of May 5K Racewalk was held on Sunday morning May 7, 2006. The event was held at Banks Oregon which is nestled next to the eastern foot hills of the Coastal Mountains that protect the valley from Pacific Ocean winter storms. The 5000 meter racewalk was held on the Banks High School 400 meter track. The well constructed asphalt track seems to never have puddles or standing water when it is raining.

The weather at the 10:00 AM start time for the race was 45 F (7 C) under a cloudy sky with clouds just covering the tops of the Coastal Mountains and with a very strong wind coming toward the participants on the finishing straight away.

Thank you to the 5 judges and the 15 volunteers that made this a very smoothly run event and an enjoyable time for the competitors. Also, thank you to Bev LaVeck for providing lunch and a wonderful cake for everyone after the race.

April 8, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. 2.8 Miles. A good turnout on a reasonable day. A little cool but not bad considering it rained all weekend on and off. Bob and a returning walker, Karl Johansen, did the double loop in nice times. I started out planning on both but was dehydrated and at 1/2 mile had to stop as got lightheaded. Strolled to the mile mark and then recovered and finished at good pace but skipped the second lap. Accidentally had real coffee on Thursday night so had only 5 hours sleep and kept urinating all night and didn't make up for the water loss on Friday. Shows how finely tuned the body is. Or is it old age?

The Seattle Masters Classic 5000 meter racewalk was held on Saturday
July 16, 2005. The racewalk was held on the West Seattle Stadium 400
meter track in West Seattle WA. This race saw the return from injuries
to competitive racing for three Seattle area racewalkers. Stan
Chraminski returned after 10 months and Dick Zerbe after 4 months. Ann
Tuberg returned with the best story describing the removal 4 months ago
of a metal screw from the small toe on her right foot with a hex wrench
and all the sounds that occurred while the metal screw was being
removed.

The weather conditions at the 9:30 AM start were overcast, humid,
temperature of 68F (20C), and a wind coming toward the participants on
the finishing straight away. At the start Ann Tuberg led competitors
for the initial lap with a very fast time. During the second lap,
Tommy Aunan moved into the lead and maintained the lead for the
remainder of the race. Bev LaVeck won the age graded performance. The

May 14th, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. A nice morning with some wind but good conditions and even a bit warm when the sun came out. Bob Novak was under the weather so skipped this and his projected race in Riverside, Cal. We had a good turnout as several walkers from last month's clinic did their first racewalk race. Congratulations Del, Bob, and Kelly. Also joining us was Gordon who has been walking for a while but just decided to hook up with our group. My sore foot is responding to new orthotics so I'm hoping to train pain free soon. Today's race was faster than I expected and it's amazing what happens when you can focus on walking versus pain... Ann also had a cold today and Joslyn suffered from lack of training syndrome.

The USATF Northwest Masters Regional and Pacific NW Association Open
10KM Racewalk was held on April 16, 2005. The racewalk was held at
West Seattle WA. The race is held a few days before or a few days
after Bev LaVeck's birthday. This year the race was held a few days
before Bev's birthday. This racewalk is also known as the Bev LaVeck
Birthday Party 10KM Racewalk. After the race, Bev also provides
lunch and cake for judges, volunteers, participants, spectators and
everyone else.

The race was held at the West Seattle Stadium on an excellent 400
meter track. This year was the first time in many years that there
was rain during the race. The weather at the 10:00 AM start time was
very cloudy, raining, windy and cold. The temperature at the start
time was 43 F (6 C). Although the competitors wore only shorts and a
shirt, the competitors quickly warmed up. However, the judges,
volunteers and spectators were the people that really suffered during
the race.

Jarad Swehosky led from the start to finish while Bob Novak and Tommy
Aunan had a great race for second. The finishers and their times are:

Women:
1) Bev LaVeck, 68, Mazama WA, 1:06:36.90
2) Carol Wilkinson, 55, Kenniwick WA, 1:08:14.40

Bart went past Bob and me about mile 2 but his form was ragged as he emphasized speed over form to get some work in before the Indoors in Idaho. He graciously declined to take the victory after I unofficially dq'd him and was glad to know what to work on before he gets into judged races. Had four ladies attend the clinic, several of them tri-athletes looking for an alternative to running.

January 8, Second Saturday Racewalk, Green Lake, Seattle, Unjudged. We missed the predicted snow but it was mid-thirty degrees with a few sprinkles so most used it for a good tempo workout after a hard race in December in good conditions.

Bart Kale, 48, 28:29 (Getting ready to head to Arizona the next day for Mariner's Baseball Fantasy camp where he'll play ball for a week and not pull too many muscles)
Joslyn Slaughter, 45, 30:02
Mitchy Young, 41, 31:18, first race with us so a PR although he has walked a marathon.
Bonnie, 40's, 34:13, another new walker who recently completed the Seattle Marathon walking.

What's with all the new walkers doing marathons and us old hands having trouble gearing up for even a half? What do they know we don't or vice versa? Probably makes a difference if we consider it a race at all out speed versus finishing and actually enjoying the experience. I know I've had a sore foot for the past year limiting my mileage somewhat but it's more laziness and lack of desire than other drawbacks. Ah, nice to have youth (it's all relative in our mainly masters sport) and enthusiasm. Maybe the enthusiasm is a good goal for the New Year.

The One Hour Postal Racewalk was held in Portland Oregon on Sunday September 12, 2004. The one hour
racewalk was held on the 400 meter track at Jefferson High School in Portland. A portion of the entry fee

the event - the Inner City Steppers and the River City Track Club - will divide the proceeds raised.

The weather at the 9:30 AM start time was partly cloudy sky, a light swirling breeze, moderate

July 10, 2004, Second Saturday Race (SSR), 2.8 miles unjudged. A nice cool day for July, 60 degrees, with only a slight breeze. We did have to contend with the milk carton derby at the south end of the lake and it cost us a few seconds of dodging and weaving. I started off too fast but then the rest chased me and got fast times. Guess we need to hire a rabbit.Bob and I are about right on pace for 27 flat 5K so hope we can break that at the 5K on the track in two weeks. I'm healthy to run again so will try and do the 5K run after the racewalk there. Hope they have two divisions so I have the break in between, not like last time where there was only 10 minutes to recover.

Stan Chraminski, 56, 24:25
Bob Novak, 55, 24:27

May 8, 2004, Second Saturday Race (SSR), 2.8 miles unjudged. A nice day at the lake with a perfect temperature - cool but warm enough to stay loose. Most walked their PR for the year. The good competition helped too as Bob and I pushed each other well to a tie and there were several other close finishes. We had two Bellingham rw's attend as Doug Ermini and Kathy Henley attended their first SSR. Also, Phoebe, Emily's 10 year old sister, did part of the course to prep for a later 1500 meter race.

Richard Zerbe
took a trip to Arizona in February and shares these results. I did a 1 minute 46 second racewalk quarter in AZ and was told it was a record though I don't know exactly what kind. I won my age group and was second by only 3/10's of a second to a 53 year old. The conditions were very bad, raining, cold (45 degrees) and windy. I went all out in the 400 so had little left for the 1500 racewalk - as you know endurance is not my strong point. I did about 9 min and 30 seconds which was also good enough for a win. The timers didn't work and the judging was loose so I can't say if I was completely legal or not. (Wow, that's a fast 1/4).

April 10th, 2004, Second Saturday Race (SSR), 2.8 miles unjudged. Nice day but almost a little too warm. No one seemed to do a fast time. Had several newcomers. Welcome to Emily and Jesse on their first SSR race. Bob was under the weather so with no one to push me, I was slower then last month, not a good trend. Maybe it was the 6:31 pace I ran around the lake course on Tuesday? Does it take more than 3 days to recover? Darn this old age is getting to be hell. Gregg had his knee injured when a skier ran into him on the slopes and had surgery so it will be the summer until we see him out again. Get well quick Gregg.

Stan Chraminski, 56, 25:07, (8:59 pace)
Bart Kale, 47, 26:29, (9:28 pace) Lots of racing so took it easy.
Bob Novak, 54, 17:04, (9:40 pace). Suffering from a cold so took it easy.
Joslyn Slaughter, 45, 27:38, (9:52 pace)
Richard Zerbe, 65, 29:10, (10:25 pace)
Ann Tuberg, 44, 29:19, (10:28 pace) Recovering well from foot surgery but still some pain.
Emily Sinclair, 15, 34:40, (12:23 pace) Starting to train for Junior competition. Nice smooth form. Great to have a young walker in the group.
Jesse Roper, 32, 34:40, (12:23 pace) Just learned to racewalk the month before through our clinic and looking good already.

January 10, 2004 Second Saturday Race (SSR), 2.8 miles unjudged.

A nice warmer morning after the cold and snow of the past week. With the poor weather recently no one was really race fit except Bart who has been doing running races. Most took it as a good workout. Ann is having toe surgery in two weeks to remove some bone spurs. We hope to see her back about when the weather improves. Rachel was under the weather today but hung in there well.

September 13, SSR at Green Lake. Unjudged. 2.8 miles. Nice day, in the 60's with little wind. Several seasonal bests today. We welcomed Tammie Corley, a former Washington resident who lived in Florida for 17 years and is now back home. She looks like a fast new addition to our walking group.

Stan Chraminski, 55, 24:25 (8:43 pace), 2003 PR
Bob Novak, 54, 24:39, (8:47 pace)
Tammie Corley, 39, 28:01 (10:00 pace), 1st race here.

I (Stan C.) racewalked the Super Jock n' Jill half-marathon Sept. 1st in 2:04:45 (9:31 pace). It was a fair course on a warm morning although the middle section went up and down several times through the UW Bothell campus. The last 3 miles were flat along the river trail as were the first 5-6 miles. They also have a 4 mile race. There used to be a racewalk division in this race however our numbers have dwindled and I was the only racewalker in the run although Simon walked the race in the walk division. Unofficial reports have Steve Frederickson passing him at about 11 miles. Steve went on to finish in 2:14 so Simon was probably in the 2:15 range.

National Masters Track and Field Championships, Eugene, Oregon, August 7-10.

The weather in Eugene was cooler than expected, making for some good racing. The 5Ks were held on the Hayward Field track on Friday morning with 6 separate races by age groups. Bev was first out of the blocks at 8 am and smoked the field in the women's 65-89 race. She took the lead and gradually pulled away for the win, setting an age 67 record in te process.

Bob Novak and I were in the 10:15 race, men's 50-59. One side of the track was still in the shade so conditions were good. We walked our best 5Ks of the year which held up for 4th place for both of us in our age groups.

Bart Kale raced last at 11:40 am in the men's 30-49 group. He held on for 5th in a very competitive race but gained some notoriety when he stubbed his toe and took a header about 10 feet short of the finish line. He got up and did the last few steps to finish to the crowd's applause and his own embarassment.

In the 10K on the road on Sunday, only Bob and I from the Pacers competed. The women's race was at 8 am and the men's at 10:30. The course was a 1K loop back and forth in front of Hayward field. There was a fast start but Bob and I paced it well and passed quite a few walkers as I finished 4th (again) and Bob was 5th this time.
